A truly wide plank hardwood floor is one of the most impressive features in any interior scheme. Yet wide plank wood flooring is a relatively new phenomenon, since it is rare to find a solid hardwood plank which is wider than 5 1/2". This is because the bigger the plank the greater the risk of movement caused by changes in humidity. The advent of engineered wood planks has changed what is possible, and at Havwoods we are now able to offer exceptional wide plank flooring up to 19" wide.
All wood is hygroscopic. This means that, no matter how well it has been seasoned and finished, when humidity is high it will absorb some moisture from the air. This causes it to swell, but as the air dries, as it does when activating heating or air conditioning in a room, the wood shrinks back. Over time, in a confined space like a floor, this continual swelling and shrinking can result in the planks themselves warping or gaps appearing between them.
Engineering wood - creating a board using multiple layers of wood - makes it virtually impossible for the board to swell or shrink. In other words, it makes the wood more stable, thus meaning that wide plank wood flooring is not only beautiful, it also now perfectly practical.
There is no universal definition of a wide wood plank. At Havwoods we only class boards over 8" wide as wide planks and all of these are ones which we consider to be particularly stable, coming from our Pureplank, Venture Plank and Henley ranges; these are available from stock in widths up to 10".
But the widest and most impressive of all our wide plank hardwood flooring offerings are those from our Hand Grade Collection. These sublime planks are perfect for use on the most prestigious sites and all are supplied in random mixed widths ranging from 11" to a spectacular 19" wide. The entire Hand Grade Collection is available from stock from our UK distribution centre.
